Y’ALL. If you’re not eating brunch at Barcelona Wine Bar you are seriously missing out. It’s FANTASTIC! I really love the restaurant for dinner/drinks already, but I’m head-over-heels now after making it my regular brunch spot.

Why would you wait in line at Highland Bakery or Murphy’s when you could hop on over to BWB? Their menu is creative + delicious, the brunch isn’t crazy busy (yet), the service is great, and you really can’t beat the atmosphere. I heart. I heart.

This is what I ate most recently at BWB brunch with Gorms + Rosh…

Bread Pudding French Toast to share. TO. DIE. FOR.

Goat Cheese and Chorizo Crepes with sweet and sour fig jam.

Plancha Omlette with herbed goat cheese and mushrooms.

Fried Egg Sandwich with bacon, manchego, sliced tomato, garlic aioli, and served with grits. (Didn’t photograph too well, but it was really tasty. Manchego was excellent on it.)

Here are a few other BWB brunch menu items that made my mouth water:

- Short Rib Hash with crispy potatoes, bell peppers, and two eggs.
- Gulf Shrimp and Grits with stone ground grits and chorizo gravy.
- Scottish Smoked Salmon with kumato tomatoes, whipped cheese, and pumpernickel toast.

Don’t those sound divine??

Check out more of Barcelona’s brunch menu here: BRUNCH TIMEEEE!

The Caseys, the Marshalls-to-be, and Kev + I had ourselves a Friday night date two weeks ago at recently-opened Cucina Asellina in Midtown. Asellina is STK‘s little sister and next door neighbor on the corner of 12th and Peachtree. Both are run by The One Group and are serious hot spots in NYC – and in my book perfect for the ATL. (Welcome to the ‘hood, Asellina!)

Asellina is my ideal neighborhood restaurant. A small, contemporary space with solid food and drinks, and a friendly wait staff. Admittedly, it already had a big check mark in my mind before I even stepped foot inside. Our delicious Friday night triple date, and later Caren West PR’s Grand Opening Fete, are what officially sealed the deal for me!

For our date night, we started off with Stuffed Cerignola Olives with roasted veal, parmigiano + semolina crust. I don’t eat olives, but everyone else at the table devoured them. They said things to me like, “Lindsay, these olives will make you love olives…” Ultimately, I didn’t try them, but I’m building up the courage. They were a huge, huge hit at our table.

We wanted to try as much as possible, so we went a teeny bit overboard with the rest of our appetizers – in fact, they almost fell off of the table at one point, so I tried to quickly capture them with a full table shot. Everything was very good, and I recommend trying each of these items. You could easily visit Asellina for drinks + apps ONLY and leave happy + full. From front to back we had: Veal Meatballs with fresh tomato, mozzarella + basil/ Calamari Fritti with spicy tomato sauce + fresh majoram/ Ahi Tuna Tartare with robiola cheese, black truffle + spring onions/ and Burrata with tomato assaggi, fresh basil + olive oil. We feasted.

But, we still had our eyes on the prize. The pizzas + primis we ordered to share sounded totally divine – and they were. One of the MVPs at our table was the Wild Mushroom Pizze with stracchio cheese + spring onion. It’s pretty photogenic, too…

I really enjoyed the Four Cheese Pizze with sausage + artichokes.

Even though we loved the pizzas, I would advise you not to skip over the pastas! They were spectacular! We shared the Pistachio Garganelli with hand-made sausage + wild mushrooms…

…and this dish. This dish was AMAZING. But, Asellina does not have an Atlanta menu on their website yet, so I am not 100% sure what it was. I’m just sayin’ – we had a few drinks. If you see this on someone’s table, ask them, or show this picture to your friendly server. It was incredible.

The biggest surprise of the night was dessert. Do not pass up dessert! I don’t care how much you ate prior to it, EVERYONE knows that we have extra space in our stomachs for dessert. It’s science, y’all…

The Citrus Panna Cotta was top notch.

People wept over the Tiramisu. In fact, I heard “this is the best tiramisu I’ve had outside of Italy” from multiple folks at our table.

The Cannolis were also very tasty.

That’s about all I’ve got. Final thoughts regarding Cucina Asellina are that it’s a great space, really excellent food, the drinks are a bit pricey for Atlanta ($12 cocktails), but overall I very much enjoy this place – and I especially like sitting on their outdoor patio facing Peachtree Street. Midtown has become quite a fun area for people (+ movie star) watching these days!

Wishing you all many excellent meals at Cucina Asellina. Bon appetit!

xx, L

NYC’s 5 Napkin Burger recently opened in Nikimoto’s (R.I.P.) old spot on 10th and Piedmont in Midtown. I must admit that my patience is once again wearing pretty thin with all of the fancy-pants burger joints opening all over town - enough already, I say – we have more than enough! Just like cupcakes are no longer sexy to me ( well hellooooo french macaroons – you’re lookin’ good), my desire to eat a hamburger has pretty much been satifsied. However, I tried 5 Napkin TWICE last week out of sheer convenience to my office and a little bit of curiosity about how it pulls off both burgers and sushi.

I ordered wrong.

JenBen and I met at 5N for lunch and were seated almost immediately. We had made a reservation, but the space seemed large enough to accommodate lunchtime drop-ins. We inspected 5N’s menu, closely investigating the burger and sushi offerings, and we both ended up ordering the 5 Napkin Veggie Burger w/ Sweet Potato Fries. 5N’s VB comes with housemade 5N sauce, b&b pickles, lettuce, and a tomato on a multi-grain roll.

I will very honestly report that the veggie burger was not great. It tasted and strongly smelled of beets and almost the entire burger fell apart as soon as I took a bite into it. I was unsuccessful in trying to mash together the red veggie crumbles all over my plate, so I stabbed at the burger with my fork. I did not enjoy it. And, I’m pretty sure I used 40 napkins (not 5) since the burger disintegrated and there was food all over the table.

I did, however, really like the sweet potato fries! They were the best of both fry-loving worlds: crispy AND soft at the same time. Frankly, they were delicious enough to redeem the meal a bit.

While I was certainly underwhelmed by my first experience, I decided to give 5N one more chance. I felt silly judging a restaurant specializing in meat burgers on their veggie burger alone. So, Rosh and I lunched at 5N on Friday and decided to tackle its specialties.

It was a gorgeous day and we asked to sit on 5N’s patio. Although I did not find the patio chairs to be particularly comfortable, I personally preferred sitting outside to dining inside of the restaurant. 10th and Piedmont is an excellent place to people watch and catch some rays.

Rosh and I started off sharing the Southwestern Sushi Roll: spicy yellowtail, cilantro, chayote, scallion, soy wrapper, jalapeno + tobiko. It was incredibly fresh and very, very tasty – perfect for sitting on a patio on a pretty day! We were really pleased.

For our entree, we split the massive Burger for 2: 1 pound of custom ground beef, American cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, b&b pickles, and 5N sauce.

Here it is in all its meaty glory:

I’m proud to report that we finished the entire burger! Hooray for us! Finishing the enormous burger led us into a fairly deep conversation about food displacement along the lines of “say – hypothetically, of course – that I just ate 1/2 a pound of beef…does that mean that I weigh 1/2 a pound more?” Yikes…

We found room for 5N’s Sweet Potato Fries (which Rosh also loved) and a Tomato, Avocado, Cotija Salad.

I am so happy that I went back to 5N to try their meat burger and sushi – what they are really all about! I was surprisingly impressed with both. Although, I do have to admit that I only used 3 napkins this time.

I will reiterate again that I’m over the fancy-pants burger craze, BUT I urge you to try 5 Napkin. (Yes, I did that in the same sentence). If you try 5N, make sure that you order the sushi and/or meat burgers – NOT the veggie. And, let me know if you do, in fact, use 5 napkins. I’m pretty literal over here, folks…

Slick + I met Rosh + Z for dinner at Floataway Cafe on Friday night. We ordered cocktails + Rosh and I both jumped at the Strawberry Pimm’s Cup. (Neither of us had tried a Pimm’s Cup before, but we were feeling a little adventurous.) I finished it WAY too fast – but with purpose. It was so unbelievably delicious! A perfect match for my summer fruit lovin’ palate…

We loved. Look how pretty, too:

floataway cafe's strawberry pimm's cup

It would take some work, but this is a drink that would be a hit at a dinner party. Definitely a crowd pleaser.

Impress Your Friends w/ a Strawberry Pimm’s Cup:
Two ounces of Pimm’s
Two large strawberries (use a third if strawberries are not enormo)
Five mint leaves

Muddle all of that together and either strain (if you don’t like chunk) or pour directly into the glass (if you are chunk-friendly).

Top it off with homemade lemonade soda. For every ounce of lemon juice add 3/4 an ounce of sweetener. To the lemon concoction, add an equal amount of soda water on top. Pour into muddled ingredients.

Drink + enjoy!

You guys. It is a.m.a.z.i.n.g. No lie.

And, so was the rest of our meal. All was splendid! Here’s what we ate:

First
Atlantic Blue Fin Tuna Crudo, Blood Orange, Chili (my fav.)
Crispy Young Squid, Sweet Onions, Asparagus, Lemon
Wood Grilled Chicken Livers, Red Onion Jam, Sourdough (decided I don’t care for chix livers…to put it nicely)

Second
Wood Grilled Hanger Steak, Pommes Frites (x2)
Wood Grilled Georgia Quail, Caramelized Sweet Onions, Shallot Mostardo, Champagne Gastrique
Margherita Pizza with Chorizo + Farm Egg

Dolci
Toffee Cake w/ Vanilla Gelato (SUPER delish!)

Truly a delightful meal. Recommend Floataway from top to bottom!

From our very first Eat Squad, the Barocai, Slick + I have wanted to see what Atlanta has to offer by way of Caribbean food. And, we knew just where we wanted it from…

The lovely Ms. Roshal (pictured above), who with her boyfriend are important components of Eat Squad, grew up in Jamaica. Her boyfriend, Z, frequently raves about Roshal’s talent for cooking authentic Caribbean food. We knew that if we were ever lucky enough for her to host a dinner party for us to try out her cuisine, we were in for a treat. So we started hinting – and she caught on.

On Sunday evening, Roshal cooked us an amazing, traditional Jamacian/ Trinidadian meal that Slick + I have been incessantly talking about since.

Please witness our feast:

Curried goat + potatoes with Jamaican/ Trinidadian curry.

Roti: Traditional bread to accompany curried goat. (Similar to naan.)

Pelau: Trinidadian rice dish cooked in coconut milk with chicken, beef + PIG TAIL! (Which Slick + Mr. Barocas loved.)

Jamaican sauce made with scotch bonnet pepper, onions + vinegar to go over Fish Escovitch.

Fish Escovitch.

A gorgeous salad with strawberries + yellow peppers.

Malibu coconut rum + pineapple cocktails to accompany the flavorful meal. (We all kiddingly mocked this drink as the “college girl’s drink of choice,” but had NO problem finishing a large pitcher…)

Everything was SO unbelievably fantastic!

Although Roshal does not have plans to open a Jamaican restaurant in Atlanta, I think the lesson here is that sometimes the most delicious + exciting food could be right under your nose. Sure, heading over to Buford Highway to try cuisine from around the world might be the easy way to do it – but it won’t necessarily be the best you can get.

When you have the opportunity to taste Caribbean dishes at a traditional restaurant, I strongly recommend you try the dishes pictured + described above. (Although, go easy on anything made with scotch bonnet pepper – yowza! I learned the hard way…)

On Sunday night, Slick + I met the Barocai, Rosh + Z and Gorms at Kaleidoscope Bistro + Pub located in Village Place Brookhaven for an early dinner and drinks. The restaurant choice was based on Gorms’ glowing recommendation – which I will always trust without question. She really knows her stuff. Other than Haven and Valenza, I haven’t eaten at too many restaurants in Brookhaven, but I continue to be pleased with what that neighborhood has to offer. Kaleidoscope totally hit the spot.

kaleidoscope bistro + pub - brookhaven

Here’s the Q+DD on Kaleidoscope: Recently opened by a few former Buckhead Diner folks, including executive chef Joey Riley, the idea behind the name is that every time you look into a kaleidoscope you see something colorful and different. That concept is applied to their own menu. They call their cuisine “global comfort food,” as both the food + drinks are ever changing. The restaurant features seasonal items and daily specials.

kaleidoscope interior

Upon arrival, we sat down at a large, wooden community table + had no trouble selecting a few delicious (and gorgeous, I might add) appetizers to start us off:

Ahi Tuna Tartare: avocado, tomato, coriander, feta, yuzu.

Thai Style Beef Jerky: bird’s eye chilis, lime, roasted rice. (My fav!)

Springer Mountain Chicken Wings: kaleidoscope sauce, bleu cheese.

For entrees, we took the owner’s expert recommendations:

Slick selected the Mahi Tostado: green chili grits, guajillo charred tomato sauce, tomato/ feta and avocado salad.

Z got the Sage Roasted Pork Porterhouse: brussels, fingerlings, mustard, pancetta.

Rosh opted for Azalea’s Famous Whole Sizzling Catfish: chinese black bean sauce, pickled ginger, lime. She won the prize for the most creatively plated dish!

The rest of us went with the Award Winning Kaleidoscope Burger: pimento cheese, slaw, green tomato chow chow, bread and butter pickles. How could we not? This burg was awarded the Judges’ Choice for “Best (Meat) Burger” in July’s Battle of the Burgers in the Virginia Highlands! It was SO great + well-complimented by the tasty Pub Fries cooked in duck fat. (Don’t judge…)

So, next time you’re in the mood for comfort food + boutique wines or fine craft beers from around the world, give Kaleidoscope a try. Not only is the food stellar + the staff friendly, but it’s also a pretty solid hangout. Get there early, though, it was packed on a Sunday night + they don’t accept reservations. I’ll certainly be back!

I’ve gotta say – Brookhaven is kinda bumpin’…

xx, L

Friday was one of the most gorgeous days of the year so far, so how better to celebrate it than with pizza for lunch?! So, Roshal, Slick + I met up @ Piola, a pizza joint with restaurants all over the world that just opened in the 1010 Midtown building around the corner from my office.

hola, piola!

As soon as we walked in, we were accosted by servers with heavy Italian accents trying to get us seated and collect our drink orders. I definitely appreciated the restaurant’s initial authentic vibe. The menu was really extensive (see Rosh below) and there were a number of items on it that sounded tasty – however my attention was immediately averted to the pizza section…

rosh w/ massive menu

We all ordered lunch specials, which seemed plentiful and well-priced (salad + entire pizza for about $3 less than a pizza, itself, would normally run you). Probably due to the novelty of the restaurant, which just opened a few weeks ago, and folks wanting to get out of the office for lunch on a beautiful day, the restaurant had a substantial lunch rush and was absolutely packed. However, we didn’t wait long to get our salads, which were fairly simple – but did the trick, and soon it was…

wall art @ piola

The pizzas were fine. They weren’t incredible, but they also weren’t terrible… Mine, the Hawaiian, tasted like an improved version of Little Azio’s pizza. Slick enjoyed his, which was covered with arugula + various cheeses.

pizza @ piola (mine)

pizza @ piola (slick's)

I think I just would have liked more toppings on mine or something… That being said, we both finished our pizzas right then and there. They were thin crust, and frankly, we didn’t feel like we were entering into a food coma or needed to take a nap when we got up to leave. So I’ll say this, if you had to choose between eating @ Antico, Shorty’s or Piola – you should do it in that order. However, if you are looking for a cute spot to grab a well-priced, hearty pizza lunch and don’t want it to feel at all like a fast food joint – definitely try Piola. It’s convenient, the service was great, the food isn’t bad and the adorable decor is energizing. I’m sure I’ll be back.

Oooooh, also, I picked up a flier on my way out of the restaurant about their Lucky Gnocchi special – information is below…

i heart gnocchi

Lucky Gnocchi Every 29th of the Month @ Piola
There are many stories about the lucky gnocchi tradition. The most famous one tells the story of San Pantaleon, a missionary, arriving in a small village in Italy on the 29th of an unknown month. He knocked at the door of a very poor house. An elderly peasant couple let him in and offered him the only thing they had on the table: Gnocchi. Soon after, the missionary left and the peasants found some gold coins under their gnocchi plates. In the meantime, San Pantaleon assembled all the villagers and directed them to gather together each 29th of the month in order to have luck and prosperity in their lives. The lucky gnocchi legend gained recognition all over the world and a lot of restaurants have “Lucky Gnocchi Day” every 29th of the month.

Piola has adapted this beautiful legend and believes EVERYBODY is lucky: Enjoy all you can eat homemade gnocchi @ Piola every 29th of the month!

In an attempt to further explore Buford HWY and challenge our taste buds, the Eat Squad met at Canton House for dim sum* on Wednesday. Canton House is not at all difficult to find. If you are coming from our neck of the woods (Buckhead + Midtown), drive up Buford HWY until you see the largest chandlier known to man through the windows of a restaurant with Chinese characters on it.

*Note: Dim sum is commonly eaten on Sunday afternoons or during lunch, however, Canton House offers dim sum carts in the evening, as well.

Canton House - street view

underbelly of the massive Canton House chandelier

Once we found the restaurant and walked inside, we were immediately shown to our table. Less than two minutes later, the servers began accosting us with stainless steel dim sum carts.

dim sum cart - steamed dishes

dim sum cart - fried items

We tried almost everything on both carts – with the exception of tripe and chicken feet. My personal favorite items were the shrimp dumplings and the pork sticky buns. Unfortunately for me, though, Slick wasn’t sharing his sticky buns…

Although the dim sum plates quickly filled me up, the boys were hungry for more. We ordered a heaping plate of chicken fried rice, which I hadn’t eaten since I was 15 at the old Prestonwood Mall in Dallas, and pork chow fun, which I thought was way too oily – but still pretty tasty.

We shared everything by way of the massive lazy susan on our table. When we requested the bill, I tried to mentally tally what I thought the final price would be for the incredible amount of food we ate. Much to our surprise, we all got out of there for roughly $12.50 per person! We were absolutely shocked at how cheap everything was. Dim sum @ Canton House is truly a cultured culinary experience that won’t put a dent in your wallet! Just a little sum-thing to think about…

On the way home, Slick and I ranked our Eat Squad expeditions so far on Buford Highway and dim sum held down my #1 spot, followed closely by our Bangladeshi dinner @ Panahar. Slick’s favorite ES meal was Korean BBQ: Hanil Kwan was definitely a fun culinary experience, but I could take it or leave it.

I’m really looking forward to our next stop on the road! My vote is for Thai…

I am sure I am not alone in finding myself with an increasingly packed work schedule, which oftentimes puts a strain on my social life. As we mature in our careers (and are pulled in a thousand different directions), it becomes even more important for us to make time for ourselves. For me, setting aside time to spend with my girlfriends can be difficult to schedule, but is critical to my overall social satisfaction and stress relief. About a year and a half ago, Dana and I started a monthly dinner club and it has been going strong ever since. Prior to forming our club, I had been part of numerous book clubs, wine clubs and dinner groups that ultimately failed - mostly due to a lack of structure. However, our dinner club has been successful because of the following five steps we took seriously from the get-go.

1 – Establishing Structure: Establishing a dinner club structure is an important step toward success. We have roughly six to eight consistent members in our dinner club. Once a month, someone volunteers to cook for the group and invites attendees to bring over a bottle of wine. We rotate each month, and members are likely to only cook for the group once or twice a year. In other dinner clubs, the host prepares the main course and a few sides, and then delegates other sides, dessert and beverages to attendees. However, we think our structure works the best because the burden to cook is fairly infrequent – which has resulted in consistent, high attendance.

2 - Selecting a Day: We decided that Tuesday would be the best day for our dinner club since our members are less likely to have plans toward the beginning of the week than they are at the end of it. I suggest discussing member’s schedules and polling them as to their most convenient day to meet each month. It’s okay to be flexible on the day of the week, too. Sometimes Wednesdays work better for our group – and no one minds if we temporarily move the day for a month or two. Additionally, we named our dinner club after the day it occurs to help members remember it. Our Evites are for the “Third Tuesday Dinner Club,” which brings me to…

3 – Invitations and Communication: It’s important to have a structured e-mail invitation so that dinner club members have all the information they need about the month’s club, including time, location, directions and information regarding the meal. Our dinner club uses Evite to communicate with members. Additionally, I think it’s important to set certain rules about cancellations. For example, our club frowns upon canceling the day of the dinner club unless it’s an emergency. We hate for the host to overspend and end up with a bunch of food left over, so it’s a good idea to set certain rules like this early on.

4 – Perpetuating Momentum: I think most dinner clubs die because they lose momentum. In hopes of avoiding a similar fate, we send out the Evite for the following month’s dinner club very shortly after the current month’s occurred so members can mark it on their calendars as soon as possible. Everyone appreciates advance planning!

5 – Diversity and Creativity: Dana and I wanted our dinner club to be a vehicle to merge our groups of friends. Our club is composed of a diverse group of girls from a range of backgrounds - which keeps conversation interesting and meals unique. We communicate about our meals prior to the dinner club so we can be sensitive to food allergies or aversions, as well as help to generate attendee interest in the meal. Members of our dinner club have cooked Jamaican food, Indian, Columbian, Mexican (tacos and tortilla soup), Italian (lasagna and ziti parmesan), kosher for Passover, create-your-own-salad, handmade ravioli, organic dinners with food purchased from the DeKalb Farmer’s Market and we’ve grilled out (turkey burgers and hobo packs).

All the members of our club look forward to our monthly meals. We hope that these five steps will help you to form a successful dinner club of your own!
